NSX Manager Host Preparation Fails When Port 80 on vCenter Already in Use
We recently implemented NSX in an existing vCenter/vSphere environment and ran across an interesting issue when attempting to prepare the hosts. SQL Server Reporting Services was co-installed with vCenter, so to prevent a conflict on TCP/80 the customer specified a custom HTTP port during vCenter installation. At this point we should have been conflict free on TCP/80 but as we soon found out, that was not the case. Read more.

VMware Releases Horizon View 7 and AppVolumes 3.0
Earlier this week, VMware released Horizon View 7 and AppVolumes 3.0 to general availability. Over the next few days I’m upgrading Clearpath’s lab environment and running both updates through the ringer. I’ll update this blog with any obstacles I encounter; below are some highlights of the updates that I’ve noted so far. As an FYI, AppVolumes 3.0 requires repackaging all applications just to get started. Read more.
Cisco Launches Hyper-Converged Infrastructure Offering HyperFlex
Cisco announced their new Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI) offering earlier this month. It is based on their tried and proven UCS compute platform combined with their HX Data Platform software (an evolution of the Springpath relationship). While one might think that there are enough HCI vendors in this space, Cisco is the first to bundle compute, storage, and networking in an easy to consume and predictable package. Read more.

EMC Corporation announced libStorage, a vendor and platform-agnostic storage orchestration, model and API. The first open source technology of its kind, libStorage elevates storage to a first-class and sustainable citizen within the container ecosystem by providing universal and portable storage capabilities for container and application platforms. Cisco Launches $10 Million Global Cybersecurity Scholarship to Increase Talent Pool; Introduces New and Updated Certifications
Cybersecurity provides the critical foundation organizations require to protect themselves, enable trust, move faster, add greater value and grow. However, research indicates there will be a global shortage of two million cybersecurity professionals by 2019. To help close this security skills gap, Cisco is introducing a $10 million Global Cybersecurity Scholarship program and enhancements to its security certification portfolio. Read more.
VMware Acquires Startup That Focuses On Making NSX Software-Defined Networking Better
NSX software-defined networking is rapidly becoming VMware's most important product, and now the vendor is moving to make it more valuable for enterprise customers. VMware is acquiring Arkin, a Sunnyvale, Calif.-based startup whose software lets organizations keep track of traffic flows and security issues in virtualized and physical environments. Read more.
Cisco Unveils Data Center Monitoring Platform
Cisco took the wraps off an analytics platform it claims will provide data center operators with complete real-time visibility into what's happening in their environment for improved operations, troubleshooting, and compliance. Cisco Tetration Analytics collects data from hardware sensors embedded in Cisco Nexus 9000 Series switches and software sensors on Linux and Windows servers. Read more.

More Corporate Shared Folders in Cloud Filled with Malware, Research Finds
Internet file sharing has long been a prime route for malware to spread. The situation is one of the reasons (aside from the exposure of proprietary data) that many companies restrict the use of cloud file sharing to corporate-approved systems. But it turns out that those enterprise cloud folders are just as bad. As more companies sanction the use of cloud applications for collaboration and sharing data—even just between individuals' computers and mobile devices—those cloud apps have increasingly become fertile ground for malware. LinkedIn Deal May Spur More Large-Cap Software, Internet M&A
Big Internet and software deals are rare. That may change in 2016. Microsoft Corp.’s $26.2 billion deal for LinkedIn Corp. could trigger other large-cap M&A for business software and Internet companies. NetSuite Inc. and Ultimate Software Group Inc. could both be targeted by companies including SAP SE, IBM Corp. and Oracle Corp. that want to strengthen their cloud-computing assets, according to Mandeep Singh, an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. Spam and Phishing in Q1 2016
The first quarter of 2016 saw a dramatic increase in the number of unsolicited emails containing malicious attachments. Over the last two years the number of email antivirus detections on computers with a Kaspersky Lab product installed fluctuated between 3 and 6 million. At the end of 2015 this number began to grow and in early 2016 there was a sharp upturn. Read more.
IT Threats During the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil
